But the winks onstage in the face of a wounded nation (good point, Kam) felt like a part of something I thought I saw in both McCain and Palin's personas during their debates -- a certain smirkiness; a little bit of condescension. Whether it was McCain's insistence that Obama didn't understand whenever they disagreed (and his refusal to look at his opponent), or Palin's winkiness in the face of a staesman's wonkishness, I don't think the American people are winking back right now.
